Title The Preliminary Study of Research Fronts from the Perspective of Research Methods

Research fronts represent areas of cutting-edge study in specific fields. They not only provide insights into current focuses and future trends, but also serve as important indicators for government policymaking with regard to technology. Since the concept concerning research fronts has not been quite common in library and information science in Taiwan, this study intends to briefly introduce this concept, hoping that people can have more in-depth understanding about research fronts. This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is research fronts’ meaning and its related concept. The second explores the basis to detect the research fronts. The third concerns research fronts’ related indicator. The fourth studies the empirical research related to the research fronts, with focus on using the research methods of bibliographic coupling, co-citation, and various citation analysis. Finally, this study proposes some recommendations for the future research.

Title The Transition of Taiwan's Information and Electronic Companies—An Empirical Study of Patent Citation Map

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the transition of Taiwan's information and electronic companies, and explore the relationship between companies and industries through plotting out patent citation maps. The fifty-nine companies studied in this paper, obtained 5,513 patents from U.S. between 1992 and 2000, and they cited 32,945 patents during these years. The research methods of this study include literature review, database retrieval, and bibliographic coupling. Resear-chers divided the period into three, and used cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling to plot out patent citation maps. The result of this study shows that a higher similarity among companies in semiconductor sector, and the relationship between companies is getting closer. In addition, the distinction between industries grows more and more ambivalent, even overlapping in some cases.
