Abstract

The Internet and digital reading are indispensable and important for modern people in the 21th century. The purpose of this study is to explore the current state of digital reading of Taiwanese adults and to investigate their digital reading behavior. The method of telephone interviews was used in this study, with a total of 1,089 interviews successfully conducted. We limited our participants to adults aged 20 and totally got 1,089. Most Taiwanese adults used desktop computers as their digital reading carrier to browse the web and query information. Half of the participants expressed that they conduct digital reading daily. Most of the participants conducted daily digital reading at home or dorm. The priority of the participants’ digital reading contents was news, the social network, and contents from Internet searching engines. Some of the digital reading purposes were entertainment. More than half of the participants prefer to read the text-based digital contents and short articles in digital format. About half of the participants expressed that their digital reading frequency increases after they use digital reading tools. The participants thought that the advantage of digital reading is its accessibility at any time, while the shortcoming of digital reading is eye fatigue. We found that using digital reading carriers for digital reading has been very popular in Taiwan, and gender, age, education and other demographic variables would affect the use of digital reading carriers.

Title Online Reading and Information Search through Hypertexts
Author Sherry Shiuan Su
Author's title Associate Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, Fu-Jen Catholic University
Abstract

One of the most innovative library services to evolve in the Internet era is reference linking, the capacity to transmit bibliographic data through hypertext links and to connect users with the full richness of electronic collections with ease. The development of information technology has shortened the distance between online reading and reading printed media. However, how can hypertextuality, one of the most prominent characteristics of online reading and writing, benefit information users? How can the nonlinearity of hypertext become compatible with the complexity of textual contents? Will the structure of hypertexts make users lost and confused? In order to explore these issues relating to the characteristics of hypertext, how hypertext compares with printed texts and its impact on information users, this study utilized observation and interviews to collect data from 21 college students. Three types of hypertext readers are identified by navigational profile: the knowledge seeker, the feature seeker and the apathetic hypertext user; subject matters and individual interests are found to have an impact on information seeking behavior in the hypertext environment; and most of the college students are seen to hold positive views towards the hypertext structure in electronic books.
