本文旨在介紹圖書館界編目的權威Michael Gorman。文中,首先摘要簡介他在圖書館事業生涯的英國書目局、美國伊利諾大學及美國加州大學三個時期的工作經歷與論著。其後,綜合他參與修訂編目規則的經驗、擔任圖書館技術服務主管的經歷及發表的豐富論著,發現Michael Gorman是一位務實的圖書館員、熱忱的圖書館學的教育家、書目控制的權威及資訊技術的機能主義者。

館務委外的理念在圖書館界應用甚早,國內圖書館界人士卻鮮少為文討論。隨著越來越多的圖書館開始進行委外服務,其決策考量及管理技術值得探討。本文首先探討圖書館館務委外服務的意義,以及其在館務的發展與應用,並闡明進行委外服務之決策考慮,以及相關之管理技術,冀使圖書館人員對於委外服務有更深層的認識,進而思考其在所屬業務範圍的應用,並盼能作為各圖書館進行委外服務之決策及執行時參考。

摘要

閱讀是人類古老的活動之一,但是,對閱讀的社會學研究則是30年代才興起。圖書館主要的功能在提供資訊給使用者,因此,圖書館對使用者的閱讀行為更不可不了解。因此,本文首先探討閱讀的性質與價值、閱讀的動機與種類、系列出版品及羅曼史引起的爭議,最後並分析圖書館應不應該蒐藏系列出版品和羅曼史之看法,以幫助圖書館因應使用者的閱讀需求。

Title Reading Behavior and the Acquisition of Popular Stories in the Library

Abstract

Reading is one of the oldest activities of mankind but research on reading from a sociological perspective does not appear until the 1930s. Since the primary function of the library is to provide information for its readers, to understand their reading behavior becomes the key issue in deciding the proper acquisition of books. The purpose of this article is to analyze the characters, value, motivation and categories of reading. It also discusses the controversy between series books and romances as well as the suitability of holding these books in the libraries.

摘要

圖書館是一個成長的有機體,所以圖書館應隨著新科技、新潮流而隨時調整。館員也必須有新的思維,新的思考模式。隨著網路的蓬勃發展、電腦科技的日新月異,讀者的要求更形多元化及複雜化,圖書館工作人員唯有不斷的充實新知,學習新技能,方能滿足讀者的需求,進而提升服務的品質。繼續教育的意義與重要性已「著毋庸議」,當務之急,在具體的做法與評量的指標,本文試著由國內外文獻探討呈現近年來圖書館界同道對這個議題的努力,接著從沙克曲線、斷續式的平衡和全面品質管理等觀念說明網路時代大學圖書館員應有的教育與訓練。

摘要

醫學圖書館員因學科背景不足、圖書館學校課程不夠專業化、大環境變化快速且攸關生命、加上資訊技術日新月異等因素,在在都凸顯出醫學圖書館員繼續教育的重要性。本文介紹英美兩國醫學圖書館界在繼續教育方面所做的努力,並拋磚引玉提出幾個值得探討的問題,接著闡明繼續教育的責任歸屬,最後對醫學圖書館員的繼續教育提出建議,希望本文能帶給國內的醫學圖書館員一個反思的機會,同時對於各圖書資訊學系及圖書館學會在規劃正規課程和繼續教育內容時,能提供若干參考。

Abstract

A number of factors underscore the need for continuing education of medical librarians: insufficient grounding of such personnel in a given subject area, library science curricula that are insufficiently professional, rapid changes in the macro environment affecting our lives, and constant advances in information technology. This article introduces the efforts made by medical library communities in the US and UK toward continuing education. It seeks to stimulate productive examination of this topic by raising several topics that are worthy of discussion and expounding the responsibilities of continuing education of medical librarians. This article aims to provide an opportunity for ROC medical librarians to reassess their knowledge and skills. It can also serve as a reference for curriculum design and continuing education course content being planned by ROC library and information science schools as well as library associations.

This paper explores the possibility of a university librarian’s continuing education from the viewpoint of lifelong learning society. By assisting the librarians developing their skills and knowledge will also enhance their contribution to the university.

Title Staff Development in University Libraries

The library is responsible in offering learning opportunities based on the needs and interest for its staff members. These activities should be organized according to the job relatedness and personnel potential. So the purpose of this paper is to introduce some basic concepts, related theories, and procedures of implementations of staff development. Questionnaires concerning the current situations of staff development in Taiwan will be provided in this paper to demonstrate the importance of staff development as a starting point in the infrastructure.

Over a century ago, Charles Ammi Cutter formulated functions of the library catalog as finding, gathering, and identifying bibliographic information. This formulation is still cited by library communities around the world even though the technology has made great impacts on the updating of cataloging rules. This paper attempts to find out that if, in the highly computerized library environment, the functions of catalog formulated by Cutter are still suitable for library and what kind of roles that the catalog would play.
